The Word of the Day is Sacrifice
Love That Costs Something
Scripture of the Day— Hebrews 13:16 (CEB)
“Don’t forget to do good and to share what you have because God is pleased with these kinds of sacrifices.”
Introductory Thought
In a world that prizes comfort, convenience, and self-preservation, the word sacrifice can feel heavy—almost unwelcome. We often associate it with loss, pain, or giving up something we deeply value. Yet Scripture invites us to see sacrifice through a very different lens.
Inspirational Reflection
According to Hebrews 13:16, sacrifice is not primarily about what is taken from us, but more about what is offered through us. God is not impressed by empty gestures or religious performances. What honors God, the writer of Hebrews tells us, is a life that actively does good and willingly shares. These are the sacrifices that rise like incense—quiet, faithful acts of love that may never be applauded but are always seen by God. Sacrifice, then, becomes a daily practice rather than a dramatic moment. It shows up when we choose generosity over scarcity, compassion over convenience, and service over self-interest. It may cost us time when we are tired, patience when we are stretched thin, or resources when we feel we have little to spare. But in God’s economy, nothing offered in love is ever wasted. Jesus modeled this kind of sacrifice perfectly. His life reminds us that love, by its very nature, is a giving force. When we live sacrificially—sharing what we have and doing good intentionally—we reflect Jesus to a world hungry for hope. Our sacrifices may seem small, but in God’s hands, they become holy.
True sacrifice is not about losing ourselves; it is about finding our lives aligned with the heart of God. “Real sacrifice is not measured by what is lost, but by love expressed through what is given.” Sacrifice is the willing offering of oneself, one’s resources, or one’s comfort for the benefit of others and in faithful obedience to God.
Sacrifice, as described in Hebrews 13:16, is a form of worship rooted in love and generosity. When we choose to do good and share what we have, even at personal cost, we live in a way that pleases God and blesses others. Sacrifice is not about suffering for its own sake, but about love made visible through action.
Reflection Questions
1. What might it look like for me to live more sacrificially in my everyday relationships?
2. Where is God inviting me to share—my time, resources, or compassion—more freely?
3. How can I reframe sacrifice as worship rather than obligation?
Prayer
God of abundant grace,
You have given me far more than I could ever earn or deserve. Teach me to live with a generous spirit and a willing heart. Help me to see sacrifice not as loss, but as love in action. May my life reflect Your goodness as I do good and share what I have with others. Let my sacrifices bring You pleasure and draw others closer to hope. Amen. Amen and Amen.
