The Word of the Day is Power

Power That Hovers, Not Hurts

Introductory Thought

Power is a word we often associate with control, dominance, or force. In our world, power is loud, demanding, and often measured by the extent of influence someone can exert over others. Yet Scripture consistently reframes power through the lens of God’s presence—quiet, creative, and life-giving. Luke 1:35 invites us to see power not as something to wield, but as Someone who draws near.

Scripture (Luke 1:35, MSG)

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you; therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God.”

Inspirational Reflection

This moment between the angel and Mary is filled with mystery, vulnerability, and promise. Mary is not given a strategy or a guarantee—she is given assurance of God’s power at work. Notice the language: the power of the Highest will hover over you. God’s power does not crash in or overwhelm her; it covers her like a protective presence. It creates life where none seemed possible.

God’s power does not overpower us—it overshadows us with grace, purpose, and possibility.”

Power is God’s active and sustaining presence, working beyond human limitation to bring about holy purpose, new life, and redemption. Mary’s story reminds us that divine power often shows up in moments of uncertainty. She did not feel powerful. She did not have control over the outcome. What she had was trust—and that was enough. God’s power met her willingness and turned it into something sacred. In our own lives, power often feels absent when we are weak, tired, grieving, or unsure. Yet these are precisely the places where God’s Spirit hovers most closely. God’s power is not asking you to be strong today. It is inviting you to be open. Where you feel unfinished, God is still creating. Where you feel overshadowed by fear, God’s power is already present with peace. God’s power is revealed not through force, but through faithful presence. When we surrender our limitations to God, the Holy Spirit brings life, hope, and transformation in ways we cannot produce on our own.

Reflection Questions

1. Where am I trying to rely on my own strength instead of trusting God’s power?

2. What fear or uncertainty might God be asking me to place in His hands today?

3. How can I become more attentive to the Holy Spirit’s quiet work in my life?

Prayer

Holy and Living God,

Thank You for Your power that comes near with gentleness and love. When I feel weak or unsure, remind me that Your Spirit is hovering over my life with purpose. Help me to release control and trust You with what feels impossible. Create in me what only You can bring to life, and give me peace as I walk in Your presence today. Amen. Amen and Amen.
