Foundational Scripture
John 10:11 (CEB)
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
Introductory Thought
In John 10:11, Jesus reveals something profound about the nature of goodness. He calls Himself the Good Shepherd, a title that reflects not only care but also sacrifice. A shepherd does not merely guide the flock from a distance; he walks among them, protects them from danger, and even risks his own life for their safety. In the same way, the goodness of Christ is not abstract—it is deeply personal and sacrificial. “Goodness is not proven by words alone, but by the love we are willing to give away.”
Good means morally right, beneficial, and marked by compassion, integrity, and selfless care for others.
Inspirational Reflection
Our world often defines goodness by reputation, achievement, or outward behavior. Yet the goodness Jesus demonstrates is rooted in love that acts for the benefit of others. The Good Shepherd knows His sheep, stays with them through danger, and never abandons them in their time of need. This picture of goodness reminds us that true goodness is relational. It shows up in the way we care for people entrusted to us—our families, friends, coworkers, neighbors, and even strangers. Goodness is seen when we choose patience over frustration, compassion over indifference, and service over self-interest. Jesus’ declaration also reveals the depth of God’s love for humanity. The Good Shepherd does not run when the wolf comes; He lays down His life for the sheep. Through Christ, we see that God’s goodness is not passive kindness but active, sacrificial love.
When we follow the Good Shepherd, His goodness begins to shape our lives. Our actions start reflecting His character. We become people who protect the vulnerable, encourage the weary, and offer presence to those who feel alone.
In a culture that often celebrates power and self-promotion, the goodness of Christ calls us to a different way—a way of humble care and faithful love.

Prayer
Good Shepherd,
Thank You for loving us with a goodness that never abandons us. You guide us, protect us, and lay down Your life so that we might live. Help us to follow Your example by showing compassion, humility, and sacrificial love to others. Shape our hearts so that goodness flows from our lives in ways that reflect Your character. May our actions lead others to the Shepherd who faithfully cares for His flock. Amen. Amen and Amen.
