The Word of the Day is Refuge
Running Toward What Is Strong
Introductory Thought
There are moments when life presses in so tightly that we instinctively look for a place to breathe, to rest, to feel safe again. In those moments, the question is not if we will seek refuge—but where. Scripture gently redirects our steps, reminding us that proper safety is not found in circumstances, positions, or control, but in the presence of God.
Foundational Scripture — Proverbs 18:10 (CEB)
“The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.”
Inspirational Reflection
The psalmist in Psalm 46:1 affirms our foundational text: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”What Does Refuge Mean? Refuge is a place of safety, shelter, and protection. Spiritually, it is the secure space where fear loosens its grip, strength is renewed, and the soul finds rest. Refuge is not about escape—it is about covering. Proverbs does not say the righteous wander or wait—they run. Refuge requires movement, intention, and trust. The “name of the Lord” represents God’s character: faithful, powerful, compassionate, and present. When we run to God, we are running toward whom He has proven Himself to be. Refuge does not mean the storm immediately stops. It means we are no longer exposed within it. God becomes our strong tower—high enough to rise above fear, sturdy enough to withstand pressure, and close enough to reach at any moment. In Him, we are reminded that safety is not the absence of trouble, but the assurance of His nearness. Refuge is found when we intentionally turn toward God rather than retreat into self-reliance or fear. In His presence, we are protected, restored, and strengthened to face whatever lies ahead.
Reflection Questions
1. When stress or fear arises, where do you most often run for refuge?
2. What would it look like to intentionally run to God first rather than as a last resort?
3. How has God been a “strong tower” for you in past seasons of difficulty?
Prayer
Faithful and Mighty God,
You are my refuge and my strong tower. When life feels overwhelming, and my strength is not enough, remind me to run to You. Cover me with Your presence, steady my heart, and renew my courage. Help me trust Your name—Your character—above all else. May I rest in the safety You provide and walk forward with confidence, knowing I am held by You. Amen. Amen and Amen.
Takeaway
Refuge is not found in running away from life, but in running toward the God who is strong enough to hold us through it. The word of the day is “Refuge”.
