The Word of the Day is Life
Life That Shines in the Darkness
Scripture: John 1:3–5 (MSG)
“Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing!—came into being without him. What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; the darkness couldn’t put it out.”
Introductory Thought
We often talk about life as something fragile—measured by seasons, circumstances, or strength. Scripture tells a more profound truth. Life is not something we merely possess; it is something we receive. And its source is not found within us, but in Jesus.
Inspirational Reflection
John opens his Gospel by anchoring life in Jesus. Before breath-filled lungs or light touched the sky, Jesus was already at work. Life did not emerge by accident; it flowed intentionally from Him. This life is not passive or weak—it shines. It pushes back darkness, refuses defeat, and continues to blaze even when shadows linger. The darkness John speaks of is absolute: fear, grief, sin (action stemmed from misunderstanding), despair, uncertainty. Yet it is never ultimate. Darkness cannot overpower what God has spoken into being. When Jesus gives life, that life carries light—guidance for our steps, hope for our hearts, and endurance for the journey.
C.S. Lewis writes, “Life with God is not immunity from difficulties, but peace within difficulties.”
Life is the divine vitality that originates in Jesus, sustains creation, and illuminates the human soul with hope that cannot be extinguished. Life is more than existence—it is a connection. John reminds us that everything alive is rooted in Jesus, and the life He gives shines as light in the darkest places. While darkness may press in, it never has the final word. To live fully is to stay rooted in Jesus, trusting that His life within us continues to glow, guide, and grow.
Reflection Questions
1. Where do you most need Jesus’s life-giving light to break through right now?
2. How have you been defining “life” by your circumstances instead of Jesus’s presence?
3. What would it look like to live today as someone carrying Jesus’s light into dark places?
Prayer
Life-giving God,
We praise You as the source of all life and light.
When darkness feels close and hope feels distant,
remind us that Your life within us still shines.
Renew our strength, restore our vision,
and help us live rooted in Jesus, the Light that darkness can never overcome. Amen. Amen and Amen.
Closing Takeaway
