The Word of the Day is Know
Foundational Scripture – Matthew 6:3 (CEB)
"But when you give to the needy, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing."
Introductory Thought
In a world that often rewards visibility and recognition, Jesus teaches a deeper spiritual truth: the value of quiet faithfulness. The call of Christ is not simply to do good, but to do good with the right heart. Some of the most powerful expressions of faith happen in the unseen spaces of life where only God is the witness. Corrie ten Boom writes, “The measure of a life, after all, is not its duration, but its donation.” To know means to perceive, understand, or be aware of something through experience or awareness. Spiritually, it can refer to the awareness of motives, intentions, and the inner life that guides our outward actions.
Inspirational Reflection
In Matthew 6:3, Jesus paints a vivid picture: the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. This image teaches a profound lesson about humility and sincerity in our acts of generosity. The point is not ignorance but purity of motive. When our hearts are aligned with God, we do not seek applause or validation from others. Acts of kindness, generosity, and compassion are meant to flow naturally from a transformed heart. When we give to be seen, the act becomes more about our reputation than the need of another. But when we give quietly, without needing recognition, our actions become worship.
There is great freedom in living this way. When we no longer depend on human praise, we are liberated to love, serve, and give wholeheartedly. God sees the hidden moments—the silent prayers, the private sacrifices, the unseen acts of kindness. Nothing done in love is ever unnoticed by God. To truly know God is to trust that God's awareness is enough. When we live for God's approval rather than public acknowledgment, our faith deepens, our character strengthens, and our service becomes more authentic.
Reflection Questions
1. When you serve or help others, what motivates your actions most deeply?
2. How might practicing quiet generosity change your spiritual life?
3. What does it mean to you that God sees and knows the hidden things of the heart?
Prayer
Gracious God,
You know my heart and every motive within me. Help me to serve others with humility and sincerity. Remove any desire for recognition that distracts from honoring You. Teach me to give freely, love generously, and act faithfully even when no one else sees. May my life reflect Your goodness in both the visible and hidden moments. Amen. Amen and Amen.
