The Word of the Day is Imitate

Foundational Scripture

(CEB) Ephesians 5:1 – “Therefore, imitate God like dearly loved children.”

“Imitation is the sincerest form of transformation.”

To imitate means to follow the example of another; to mirror their character, actions, and spirit. It is more than copying behavior—it is embodying values. In Ephesians 5:1, Paul does not command imitation from fear or obligation, but from identity: “like dearly loved children.” We imitate God not to earn love, but because we are already loved. Children naturally mirror what they see. They repeat words, adopt gestures, and reflect tone. Likewise, as believers living in a complex and divided world, we are called to reflect the character of God—God's compassion in conflict, God's patience in pressure, God's integrity in leadership, and God's mercy in moments of offense.

In our homes, ministries, hospitals, classrooms, police departments, and communities, people are watching. The question is not whether we are imitating something, but who we are imitating. To imitate God is to make love visible. In a culture that often rewards aggression over gentleness and opinion over understanding, imitation of God stands out. When we choose forgiveness over retaliation, dignity over degradation, listening over lecturing, and humility over pride, we are modeling divine character in human form. Imitation is discipleship in motion. It is theology lived out loud.

As dearly loved children, we do not strive anxiously—we reflect confidently. We do not perform for approval—we respond to affection. The more time we spend in God’s presence, the more naturally God's character shapes our response to life’s challenges. When people encounter us, may they glimpse the God in us.

Reflection Questions

1. In what situations do I most struggle to reflect God’s character?

2. What specific attribute of God (patience, mercy, courage, compassion) is God inviting me to imitate right now?

3. If someone observed my leadership or ministry this week, what would they say I am imitating?

Prayer

God,

Thank You for calling me Your dearly loved child. Help me to imitate You—not superficially, but sincerely. Shape my words, soften my responses, and align my heart with Yours. In moments of stress, let me reflect Your patience. In conflict, let me model Your grace. In leadership, let me embody Your integrity. May my life mirror Your love so clearly that others are drawn not to me, but to You. Amen. Amen and Amen.
