The Word of the Week is Transition

Foundational Scripture

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

Introduction: Living in a World of Change

Jennie Wilson wrote in the early 1900s,

“Time is filled with swift transition.”

That statement is just as true today as it was then.

Everything around us is changing:

Seasons change

Roles change

Relationships change

Circumstances change

But in the middle of all that change, Hebrews reminds us of something powerful:

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

Which means while everything around you may be shifting, your foundation does not have to.

Movement 1: Transition is Inevitable

Transition means moving from one state, one place, one season into another.

It is not optional—it is inevitable.

From the very beginning of life, we are transitioning:

From infancy to childhood

From childhood to adulthood

From one assignment to the next

And yet, even though transition is natural, we often resist it.

Why?

Because transition disrupts:

Our comfort

Our control

Our predictability

We like what we know—even if what we know is not where God wants us to stay.

Movement 2: The Problem is Not Transition—It’s Our Response

The question is not if you will go through a transition.

The question is:

How will you respond when it comes?

Many people respond in one of three ways:

They resist it

They run from it

Or they remain stuck in what was

But God invites us into a different posture.

Movement 3: Three Postures for Navigating Transition

1. Expect It

Transition is not an interruption—it is part of God’s design for growth.

If nothing ever changed, nothing would ever develop.

Growth requires movement.

2. Embrace It

What feels like disruption may actually be divine development.

The very thing you are uncomfortable with may be the tool God is using to shape you.

New roles stretch you

New environments challenge you

New seasons refine you

God often does His deepest work in unfamiliar places.

3. Engage It

Transition is not something you survive—it is something you participate in.

You engage it through:

Prayer

Obedience

Reflection

Faithful action

Instead of asking, “Why is this happening?”

Begin asking, “God, what are You forming in me through this?”

Movement 4: The Stability of Christ in Unstable Seasons

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

This is the anchor.

Because while:

Your job may change

Your relationships may shift

Your environment may feel uncertain

God does not change.

His Character is consistent,

Promises are reliable,

Presence is constant,

So even when your situation is unstable, you can still be steady.

Not because life is predictable, but because God is faithful.

Movement 5: Transition is Where Growth Happens

We often think transition is the end of something.

But spiritually, transition is often the beginning.

It is where:

Identity is clarified

Faith is stretched

Dependence on God is deepened

You don’t become who God is calling you to be by staying where you’ve always been.

Transition is the bridge between:

Who you were

And who God is forming you to become

Movement 6: Don’t Fear What God is Using

Here is the challenge:

We often fear transition because we cannot control it.

But what if the very thing you fear… is the very thing God is using?

To reposition you

To prepare you

To refine you

Transition is not punishment—it is preparation.

Conclusion: Stand Firm While Moving Forward

Jennie Wilson reminded us:

“Time is filled with swift transition.”

But Hebrews reminds us: Christ does not change.

So here is the balance:

You can move through transition

without losing your foundation.

Do not anchor yourself to what is changing.

Anchor yourself to the One who never changes.

Reflection Questions

1. What transition am I currently experiencing, and how am I responding to it?

2. Am I resisting this season, or am I trusting God through it?

3. What might God be developing in me during this transition?

Takeaway

Transition is inevitable—but when your foundation is in Christ, it becomes a pathway for growth rather than a place of fear.

Prayer

Gracious and unchanging God,

Thank You that while life shifts and seasons change, You remain the same. Help me to trust You in every transition I face. Give me the courage to expect, embrace, and engage the changes before me. Strengthen my foundation in You so that I am not shaken by what is temporary. Shape me, grow me, and guide me through every season.

In Your steady and faithful name, Amen.

Amen and Amen.
